All in Colorado gala dinner builds momentum, raises funds
Despite predicted snow and heavy traffic, supporters filled the gallery at DU’s Driscoll Ballroom Sept. 11 to celebrate and support Colorado’s quest for universal health care.
“I’m very happy to see all of us here, that we have this smart, hardworking group of people… It’s we who can do it, it’s we who can make this work,” said keynote speaker T.R. Reid, a journalist, documentary filmmaker, and author of “The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care.”
Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres prepared by Emilie Parker and Elaine Branjord and music by Denver guitarist Beau James. They anted up for amazing auction articles (Thanks, Donors!) which auctioneer extraordinaire Helena Unger spotlighted with flair and a little help from her sidekick, Foundation Communications Director Sara Wright. The empowered crowd sang along with Saja Butler and the “Health Care Singers” to Butler’s original song “Better Way.” And they heard from Co-operate Colorado’s Campaign Director Corrine Rivera-Fowler about growing grassroots support across Colorado for Colorado-grown health care (For you, for us, for less!). Attendees received an information-packed booklet prepared by Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care Board President Ivan J. Miller called: “The Colorado Health Care Cooperative: How it Would Work.”
Reid said the proposed Colorado Health Care Cooperative is a smart plan, Colorado is the right place and 2015 is the right time to bring universal health care to all in Colorado for less. (Watch his speech: Click here.)
“I was a political reporter for decades for the Washington Post and NPR,” Reid said. “I’ve covered lots of candidates, I’ve covered lots of referenda and initiative campaigns, I’ve covered lots of policy debates. And I really think this Colorado (Health Care) Cooperative is one of the best ideas I’ve ever seen…
“This is a way that we can serve all the people of Colorado, we can serve our state, and through the demonstration effect, we can do a great thing, an historic thing, for our Country.”
The event raised funds, spirits and awareness, and benefited the Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care. Didn’t make the event? Place a bid to take the trip of a lifetime and support the Foundation now!
